Emerging Artists to Invest in for the Young Collector

By Victoria Editor

3 emerging artists black millennials should invest in now.

As millennials are increasingly plagued by rising education costs, a shortage of high-paying jobs, & the gentrification in their neighborhoods, building wealth continues to be a challenge. The collection of fine artworks has been a tactic of the privileged to not only garner wealth but, more importantly, to secure it for future generations.

While institutions like Sotheby’s & Christie’s are selling works for 10’s & 100’s of thousands of dollars, small galleries & fin-tech companies like Art Money are making art buying easier & more accessible for those who feel alienated by the market. We understand that art collection remains out of reach for many due to financial constraints, but for those who are able, we recommend diversifying your financial portfolio. Study the market & scrutinize artists’ academic achievements as well as the awards & fellowships they've garnered throughout their careers to make an informed decision. If buying for the sole purpose of collecting for enjoyment, you may elect to make your decision from an emotional position.

No matter your motivation in becoming a collector, we have identified a few emerging artists discovered at the 2018 Prizm Art Fair who offer stunning, masterful works at approachable price points.

Christa David invites the viewer into an intimate experience with her small works that interrogate African-American identity, celebrate divine femininity, & champion Black resilience. Her surprising method of using precision cutting, off-kilter placement, & curatorial selection of photographic imagery is provocative.

Patrick Quarm, Ghanaian fine artist and instructor

Quarm’s work contends with the duplicity of what the artist refers to as a “hybrid culture” as he interrogates post-colonial identity, honors ancestral heritage and legacy, and considers contemporary influence. His saturated figurative paintings make use of traditional print motifs and tactile detailing.
